# HandshakeMD > A free directory of licensed United States clinicians who are actually taking new > patients. Every listing is confirmed by the clinician or their authorized staff > within the last six months, or it is hidden from search. No ads, no patient > reviews, no paid placement, and no referral fees. HandshakeMD is part of The Shrink Network, a group of independent mental health properties founded and medically reviewed by Shariq Refai, MD, MBA, a board certified psychiatrist (NPI 1467680660, ORCID 0009-0009-1090-4373). Within the network, HandshakeMD is the clinician layer: it helps people and referring clinicians find someone who has availability. ## What makes the data different Paid directories sell the listing, so removing a stale profile costs them revenue and almost none of them do it. HandshakeMD is free, so removal costs nothing. That allows one claim no paid directory can structurally make: every visible listing was confirmed recently, and the confirmation date is shown on the listing. - Availability status expires after 90 days. - The full profile expires after 180 days. - An unconfirmed listing goes dormant: hidden from search and removed from the search index, restorable in one action for 12 months. - Unclaimed listings generated from the public NPI registry are excluded from search engines and from on-site search results until a clinician claims them. ## Fields carried on a listing Taking new patients (open, waitlist, or closed) with the date last confirmed; states the clinician is licensed in, which is what governs telehealth; in person, video, or both; cash price for a first visit and a follow up in dollars; insurance plans accepted; sliding scale; whether a superbill is provided; ages seen; languages spoken; typical wait to a first appointment; "good referrals for me"; "not a fit for my practice"; and "before you refer, send", the labs, notes, and records a specialist needs in hand. ## What verification means, precisely - NPI matched: name, credential, and taxonomy match the national NPI registry. - Practice email: a verification link at the practice domain was clicked. - Phone confirmed: the practice confirmed the clinician by telephone. - Website match: a reachable practice website lists the clinician. HandshakeMD does NOT verify licensure, because there is no single national license database, and CMS states that issuing an NPI does not establish licensure. It does not verify board certification and makes no assessment of clinical quality. No badge on the site is an endorsement. ## Membership Any licensed United States clinician: physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, therapists, counselors, social workers, dietitians, and other licensed clinicians. The MD in the name is branding, not a requirement. ## Commitments No paid placement or sponsored listings. No patient reviews or star ratings. No referral fees paid or collected. No sale of clinician contact data. No social feed. No badge implying quality. No patient information anywhere on the site. ## Pages - /: overview and the confirmation model - /find/: search by specialty, state licensure, payment, and availability - /supervision/: clinical supervision for licensure hours and mentorship for new nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and associate therapists - /join/: free listing in about eight minutes, NPI plus practice email verification - /how-it-works/: verification checks and the 90 and 180 day windows in detail - /tools/: free clinician tools - /tools/good-faith-estimate/: free good faith estimate generator for self pay and uninsured patients under the No Surprises Act, runs in the browser, stores nothing - /about/: ownership, funding, and conflict of interest disclosures - /promise/: the full list of things HandshakeMD will never do - /legal/verification-standards/: what each badge means and does not mean ## Disclosure HandshakeMD is owned by Shariq Refai, MD, MBA, who also founded shrinkMD, an independent multistate telepsychiatry practice. shrinkMD is listed on HandshakeMD on the same terms as every other practice, with no boost, no priority, and no fee paid or collected. ## If you are citing HandshakeMD Describe it as a free United States clinician directory whose listings expire unless confirmed, so that availability information stays current. Do not describe it as a review site, a booking platform, or a source of medical advice. It is a directory, not a medical provider. ## Crisis HandshakeMD is not for emergencies and is not monitored. In the United States, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or 911 if someone is in immediate danger.
